This week has been a completely "meh" week so far. When I slipped and hurt my knee a couple of weeks ago I noted that the inside of my left ankle felt a little sore after that. I was more concerned about my knee so I didn't really pay much attention to it. Then last week it started to feel more uncomfortable last week on my runs. It wasn't too bad on my trail run, but I'm guessing that was because I was running on a softer surface instead of pounding pavement.
On Monday the hurtiness was definitely more present. I didn't want to attempt to run since it was now hurting just walking around. It sent me into a bit of a funk and I haven't felt like doing too much of anything. I took Monday and Wednesday off when I definitely could have gone for a swim or a water run instead. It is hard to push past that pity of party for one sometimes! Finally today it was time to do…something! Let's focus on a few positive things.
First up, I put up my hair into an awesome sock bun that a couple of ladies at work complimented me on. (As an aside, just after Christmas I coloured my hair back to match my natural colour for the first time in 12 or 13 years…I'm shocked to see how brown it is! So much for my natural blonde colour…)

Next up I did three workouts through the Nike Training Club app tonight - Laura Enever's Fierce Workout (one of the bonus ones that is great for working balance and core), along with a leg and shoulder workout. Have I mentioned how much I'm loving this app? There are some great workouts on here.
Finally I set a personal best record on my plank today! I'm definitely starting to notice that my core is feeling stronger, so doing the plank a day challenge is helping me out!
As for my ankle? I've been icing it and I have an appointment to see my chiropractor tomorrow to get his take on my ankle. I'm hoping that some ART will help to sort this out. Keep your fingers crossed for me! I have some big hopes for this year and I'm hoping to get past some of these little niggly issues.
How do you avoid getting into a funk when aches/pains/injuries strike?
I usually dither about it it's actually something thats an issue, or if it's just an excuse to procrastinate. The pain will tell me. Then it's a good time to take a rest break, and deal with other stuff. Every now and then I wallow in self pity about my old broken down bod and how I'll never run or swim or bike or anything again. That gets it out of my system.
ReplyDeleteI hope you figure it out!! Think it might be tendon related? My tibial tendon went wonky but it took awhile to figure it out. RICE :) let me know what ART says.
ReplyDeleteAlso Nike training app is awesome! I've had it for awhile.
ReplyDeleteI try to remind myself that I need to take care of myself for the long term. It sucks to have an injury and may (or may not) have an effect on training or a race...but that I'd rather take care of my ankles or knees now and be able to walk when I'm 80 than be in a wheelchair or be in constant pain because I wasn't patient enough to wait it out in my 30s. hat being said - it is definitely hard to think that way and I'm not always as patient as I should be.
ReplyDeleteNice sock bun! I need to actually try one one of these days.
You are doing the things you need to do to make sure it won't be a bigger injury. I am a well known attendant to my pity party of one when it comes to injuries. I find that KT tape really seems to help when I am injured. I used it when my ankle was feeling wonky last week and within 2 days, it felt like normal (Of course, I was also doing the other things such as RICE, advil, stretching, etc. so hard to tell if it got better quicker than if I hadn't used KT tape....)
ReplyDeleteAs someone who is sitting here with a hurt ankle you have my sympathies. I hope it turns out to be a quick fix.
ReplyDeleteI'm so impressed with your plank time. Hope your ankle is ok!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your ankle, hopefully you get some relief soon. Love your hair, wish mine was long enough for that!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about the ankle! Love the super cute sock bun! Looks great!
